Independent Dose Evaluation Software for Dosimetry Audits
Overview
This project involved the development of a Python-based software tool for independent dose evaluation in postal dosimetry audits using RPLD and OSLD systems. The tool was designed to provide a secondary verification workflow for audit dose calculations and to support the quality assurance of the IDEA audit software, particularly after software updates, configuration changes, or modifications to calculation workflows.
My role
I developed the software workflow and implemented the dose verification pipeline, including input-file handling, audit-type selection, system-parameter management, correction-factor application, comparison against IDEA-calculated results, and generation of IAEA-format output files. The project combined medical physics knowledge, dosimetry audit procedures, and Python-based software development.
Methods & tools
The tool processes dosimeter readout files, DataSheet PDFs, reference irradiation files, IDEA evaluation files, and long-term system correction files. It supports different audit categories, including hospital, primary, reference, and SSDL audits. The workflow applies the required correction factors and generates independent dose-evaluation outputs that can be compared with IDEA software results.
Quality assurance purpose
In radiotherapy and dosimetry audit systems, independent verification is essential for maintaining confidence in calculation workflows and supporting patient safety. This software provides a second-check system for dose calculations, helping ensure that audit results remain reliable when the primary evaluation software is updated or modified.
Outcome & output
The result is a working Python-based dose verification tool with a structured user interface, persistent system-file management, automated processing, and result summaries comparing the independent calculation with IDEA outputs. The tool supports the quality assurance of postal dosimetry audit workflows for RPLD and OSLD systems.
Use case
Developed as an internal quality-assurance tool for the IAEA Dosimetry Laboratory. The software provides an independent second-check workflow for dose calculations used in postal dosimetry audits, supporting verification of the primary audit evaluation process.
